This humpback whale cow and calf set has many hours into creating it by rolling a slab of stoneware clay then carving the whales into the clay. After the bisque firing I painted underglazes to blend the blue green of the ocean and the black, greys and white of the humpbacks. The barnacles I layered glazes to give them a bit of a texture. Once all the underglazes were dry I hand painted clear glaze over them. On the back side I painted a humpback blowing bubbles as they do when they are bubble net fishing which is just amazing to see and hear their vocalization while doing so. When we went to Sitka, Alaska for the chance to see the humpbacks bubble net fishing a couple years ago, we were lucky enough to see them do so a few times on the days we were out in the Sitka Sound. Plus photograph some of their flukes and submit them into Happy Whale - a tracking system to when someone else submits a photo of the same fluke I get a notification of the sighting. Since the middle of March a few of the whales I submitted are back in the Sitka Sound area from wintering in the Maui area. Makes me want to take another whale watching vacation.
